Mentorship and Leadeship
The I.K.E. Program—Identity, Knowledge & Empowerment—serves youth ages 6–14, helping them discover their strengths, build confidence, and develop the academic, leadership, and life skills needed to thrive. Through culturally affirming learning, mentorship, and hands-on experiences, youth are empowered to recognize their potential and become tomorrow’s leaders and engaged citizens.
I.K.E. provides academic enrichment, STEAM activities, arts and cultural education, leadership development, career exploration, and goal setting. Field trips to colleges, technology centers, businesses, and historic and cultural sites expose youth to new experiences and future opportunities.
Through partnerships with families, schools, mentors, and community organizations, I.K.E. creates a supportive environment where youth can learn, lead, and grow.
Learn to play Djembe Drums
Students will learn to play traditional rhythms from Guinea West Africa, played on the Djembe to perform at the Groove City Culture Fest.
Emphasis will be placed on how drumming can benefit us in a multitude of ways, from stress reduction, improved focus, mindfulness, hand-eye coordination, and creating unity within a group.
Students will learn the history, cultural significance and traditions of the music and its people. The drums are truly the call to community: They bring people together and energize and inspire us.

There are 2 components that students will learn:

Create and develop choreography with the ultimate goal to perform at the Groove City Culture Fest and for their peers and family.
Using the principles of Kuumba (means creativity) and Ujima (means Collective Work and Responsibility) will provide students with the insight to become productive citizens in society.
